Hear ye, hear ye, good folk, for old Vilma of Orlane has a tale to spin for you from the latest trials of our brave adventurers! It was day nine for our heroes in the dreaded barrel maze, and troubles a-brewing!
The Perilous Path and a Pitfall's Ponderance
The air was thick with tension, for the vile gargoyle Zax had been taunting our heroes without end. And wouldn't you know it, two of their number, Nikki and Dwaram, had mysteriously vanished from the group. Despite these ill omens, a plan was needed, and brave Los stepped forward, ready to be in charge.
Their strategy was bold, yet simple: Los would venture into the gargoyle's lair to draw them out, leading them back into the hallway where the others lay in ambush. Nor, with her unique talents, aimed to summon a "Fantasmal Force" – an illusion, mind you, but one they hoped the gargoyles would believe was a true friend.
But alas, even the best laid plans often go awry, especially in a place as treacherous as the barrel maze! As our stout Armatzi positioned himself, the very floor opened up from beneath him, plunging him into a 10-foot pit! A stark reminder that one must always search carefully before stepping. Poor Armatzi took six points of damage from the fall, though he was quickly aided by a healing potion from a compassionate comrade.
A true sage knows that every challenge presents an opportunity. The heroes even pondered how to use this new pit to their advantage, perhaps making it appear as if it hadn't been triggered to trap a flying gargoyle. However, the cunning Zaxic, their "gargoyle friend," had only ever been observed flying, never walking the ground. This led to a brief, yet amusing, interlude about whether one would walk if one could fly. It seems our adventurers have a knack for getting into these situations!
Zaxic's Treachery and Battle Plans
Now, a word of caution about Zaxic – for he is incapable of telling the truth. Our heroes, who had the misfortune of dealing with him previously, confirmed that he had lied to them "tons of questions" worth. Some even suspected he had tricked them into selling their souls! Though Los bravely declared that Zaxic, being a low-level demon, likely didn't hold the true power over their souls, having perhaps "sold it off" himself.
Before the main clash, the group wisely decided to position themselves on each side of the narrow hallway for a proper ambush point. Even Zaxic, after some convincing, begrudgingly moved from the center of the hall.
The plan solidified:
• Los: To engage the gargoyles, draw them back, and retreat to the ambush hallway.
• Feno: Attack from the back, relying on his sword "Stabby stab and hope for the best".
• Armatzi: To prepare and cast the "Prayer" spell as Los headed down, releasing it once Los was in position to boost the allies and weaken the enemies. Afterward, he would use lower-level spells as support.
• Cairo: Planned to throw a lit vial of oil at the gargoyles to weaken them by heating and cooling the stone, making them brittle.
• Norsha: To use her "Fantasmal Force" at the opportune moment, dependent on the gargoyles' actions.
The Ambush and a Surprise Attack!
Los bravely walked into the gargoyle room, finding many of the stone creatures perched on a ledge. Two of them, drawn by the scent of "fresh meat," flew towards her. After a brief, fruitless attempt at conversation, where it was revealed that the gargoyles' leader was "Zigstrol" and Zaxic was his cast-out enemy, Los decided to sprint back for the ambush.
Despite taking a few hits from the gargoyles' claws, Los made a "hasty retreat," yelling "Four gargoyles! Four gargoyles!" as she ran. And what a splendid ambush it was! The heroes surprised the gargoyles as they rounded the corner, granting Armatzi time to cast his Prayer spell and allowing Arn, Feno, and Cairo "free attacks".
The battle commenced:
• Feno: With his "icing death sword," swiftly slew the first gargoyle.
• Arn: Unfortunately, missed with his "Witherbrand" during the surprise round.
• Cairo: Threw his lit oil vial, hitting and dealing nine points of damage to a gargoyle, while "trash talking" Zaxic to provoke them further. He managed to slay three gargoyles with his oil in this combat area.
• Norsha: Successfully summoned an Earth Elemental with her Fantasmal Force. Though a moment of hubris, when she tried to make her earth elemental float to be stealthier, risked its believability. However, the elemental proved its worth by effectively slaying one of the gargoyles in a single hit.
The gargoyles were formidable, but the heroes fought with increasing fervor. Arn and Feno, in particular, proved to be formidable against the stone creatures, consistently dealing significant damage. In total, the group had slain four gargoyles in the ambush area, and four more in the area beyond that.
The Lightning of Magog and Zigstrol's Demise
As the party cautiously advanced, they faced another deadly challenge. A bolt of "powerful lightning" shot down the pathway, forcing Arn and Feno to make saving throws. The bolt, to their dismay, bounced back, hitting them twice for a staggering 21 points of damage each, nearly killing them outright! This "spell casting gargoyle" was indeed a formidable foe. They learned that this particular gargoyle was named Magog.
Their pursuit of the fleeing gargoyle led them to a double door, where they encountered Zigstrol, the leader, who boldly welcomed them to their doom. But Arn, tired of games, immediately threw his hammer, dealing eight points of damage. As more gargoyles emerged, the stage was set for a truly epic confrontation.
And then, a moment for the ages! Our mighty Arn, with his hammer, faced Zigstrol, the large and imposing leader with a battle axe. Knowing his strength, Arn delivered a single, devastating blow, dealing 36 points of damage and slaying Zigstrol outright! The other gargoyles were seen to shake and tremble at the fall of their leader! Truly, his "smash" attack is amazingly effective against big enemies.
Betrayal, Blindness, and an Ongoing Struggle
Just as victory seemed within grasp, the conniving Zaxic, the one who had taunted them from the start, revealed his true colors! He yelled out, "Slay the infidels! I am now your leader!" The gargoyles, with their alien reasoning, seemed to believe him.
The battle raged on, with Zaxic himself attacking Cairo. Another magic-wielding gargoyle (not Magog, but one who cast the "speed" spell) targeted Norsha, blinding her with a "blackness" spell. Even under this affliction, Norsha managed to maintain her concentration on her elemental. But the elemental, taking repeated blows, eventually fell.
And in a moment that sent shivers down my spine, a gargoyle came from behind, dealing a crippling 11 points of damage to Armatzi, who went down to minus two health! Our only healer was gravely wounded!
The session ended with our heroes in a precarious position, facing Zaxic and three other gargoyles, with Magog, the lightning-wielding gargoyle, still alive and ready to strike. The fight is far from over, good folk, but with heroes as brave as these, who knows what wonders – or horrors – the next chapter will bring!
